BAC Bricklayers Local 56 — (part of ADC 1 IL), IL
Local 56 of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) organizes the bricklayers and refractory masons trade in the (part of ADC 1 IL), IL jurisdiction. Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that BAC Local 56 members were exposed to asbestos-containing materials at industrial, institutional, and construction jobsites across the local jurisdiction throughout the U.S. asbestos era (approximately 1930s-1980).
BAC Bricklayers Trade — Asbestos Exposure Overview
Bricklayers and refractory masons in the BAC are the U.S. trade responsible for installing and relining refractory brick, monolithic castable, and gunning-mix linings in blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces, open-hearth vessels, ladles, coke oven doors, reheat furnaces, glass melter tanks, cement kilns, catalytic crackers, and industrial boilers. Across the U.S. asbestos era, plaintiffs alleged that BAC bricklayers were exposed to airborne chrysotile asbestos every time they cut, mixed, or laid asbestos-bonded refractory brick and every time they poured asbestos-refractory castable.
BAC members allegedly worked in daily contact with asbestos-bonded blast furnace refractory brick, asbestos-refractory castable for BOF hoods, asbestos-refractory ladle gunning mix, asbestos-refractory monolithic gunning cement for coke oven repair, asbestos-refractory tunnel kiln car insulation, asbestos-refractory board for reheat furnace walls, and asbestos-refractory ceramic fiber blankets. Refractory relining campaigns at integrated steel mills, cement rotary kilns, glass container tanks, refinery process heaters, and pulp-mill recovery boilers put BAC bricklayers at the direct dust source during every rebuild.
